The Crack Detox Process
The first step in treating crack dependency or addiction is crack detox. Your body needs to be cleared of all traces of cocaine. Perhaps you are ready to take this step and are wondering what the process would be like.
The Detoxification Stages
The process of detoxification must be supervised closely. Crack stays in the human body for a short time so a user can begin to feel withdrawal symptoms a few hours after they stop usage. The first few hours after someone stop uses crack is called a crash which is actually the acute withdrawal stage. The acute withdrawal stage can last for about 9 hours to 4 – 5 days. During a crash or acute withdrawal, a recovering user may experience these withdrawal symptoms which are often times a reverse of what they felt when they were using crack:
- Extreme cravings
- Sleep problems
Based on the peculiarity of the individual, the severity and intensity of the symptoms will vary. They are not a ‘one size fits all’ option.
Thus, crack detox is best carried out under medical supervision or with medical assistance. Medical detox will involve the use of medications such as beta-blockers and anticonvulsants which are used to reduce hypertension and seizures while some others can be used to manage cravings.
After the crash stage, the recovering user enters into the post-acute withdrawal stage (PAWS) and begins to experience the related symptoms. This protracted withdrawal stage usually lasts from one week to a month after stopping use. Symptoms include:
- Anhedonia which is the lack of the ability to feel pleasure without using crack
- Increased appetite
- Lack of motivation
Can You Quit Crack At Home?
Detoxifying from crack is already a great feat to pull off not to talk of detoxifying on your own. It is not just difficult, it could also be extremely dangerous. When you detox at home on your own, there are no professionals to monitor the withdrawals symptoms. Due to repeated crack use, your body would have experienced changes in the way it responds so there is no way to predict how your body will react to going off crack and what symptoms it will experience. If you must go through the detox process at home, then ensure you have people around you that will help and support you as you progress.
Can You Quit Crack Rapidly?
You should not opt for a rapid crack detox treatment. Rushing the process of crack detoxification is never advised even though the process can truly be tough and difficult to endure. The crack detoxification process will be more effective and safer if it is done following the standard and traditional treatment methods. The withdrawal symptoms a recovering user experiences when they are in detox can be really severe and rushing the process will only aggravate such severity. This also applies to quitting cold turkey. It is not advisable to go the cold turkey way as the cravings can be really intense and can easily trigger a relapse.
